Artist Archive: Ana Mendieta

Untitled (Glass on Body Imprints – Face), 1972

Born in Havana, Cuba (1948), Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-American artist, self described as making "earth-body" art. Her work is largely autobiographical exploring the relationship between her body and the earth; often challenging the lens in which we typically view things in the world. She worked within various mediums from performance art to sculpting; while flirting a tone that touched on gender and violence, as well as emotive ritualistic storytelling.

Throughout Mendiata's work is a stunningly subtle theme of contained feminine aggression which, seems to draw parallels between the exploitation of both women and Mother Earth.
